THIS SORROW WE SHARE
Whatever else follows as speculation gives way to facts about what really happened in Ottawa today and why; whatever we decide it means or doesn't mean; whatever it says or doesn't say about us as a country when shots ring out on Parliament Hill; however it does or doesn't change anything or everything; whatever the stories we build around this event and however it changes the story of who we are, the most sorrowful and enduring aspect of it for me is this: at the foot of the National War Memorial, a soldier was killed while standing guard over the symbol of this country's patient courage in the pursuit of peace. That alone is a wound that will not heal without leaving a scar on the heart of Canada.
